Gold mining in the Lake Victoria region is by and large undertaken by artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM). A consortium of partners led by The Impact Facility are collaborating with dozens of ASM mines in the region to facilitate improved access to formal gold markets, while also improving working conditions. This involves not only the reduction of the use of harmful mercury, but also assisting mines in the legalisation process, improving working conditions and bolstering the position of women who are often marginalised within the mines’ microeconomic structure.
