Prof Liam Glynn is a rural GP in Ballyvaughan in Co Clare and the Professor of General Practice at the School of Medicine, University of Limerick. He qualified from Trinity College, Dublin and, after completing general practice training in the Scottish highlands and surviving some remote health care postings to Guyana and Ecuador, he returned to Ballyvaughan Co Clare where he has been working as a rural GP for the last 24 years. Here he is founding Chair of the North Clare Primary care team, which cares for a rural population of approximately 8000 people spread over 600 sqkm. In 2015, along with other Rural GPs, he co-founded the “No Doctor No Village” advocacy campaign and remains an active advocate for Rural healthcare, most recently as organising chair of the World Rural health conference 2022 in Limerick. His primary research interests are in preventive medicine with a focus on physical activity and on bringing technological solutions to healthcare. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners, the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland and the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine. He has over 200 publications, 5 book chapters and over six thousand citations. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, he worked as a frontline clinician in general practice and the COVID-19 Community Assessment Hubs and co-founded #COVIDWATCHIRL for which he recently received the University of Limerick’s President’s Award.
